Death on Epic Universe Roller Coaster Ruled Accidental

Orlando, FL, Dec 2025:

The tragic death of a 32-year-old visitor at Universal’s Epic Universe theme park has been officially ruled an accident, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and medical examiner reports released this month.

Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who was visiting the new Florida park on 17 September 2025, became unresponsive shortly after riding the high-speed Stardust Racers roller coaster, a dual-launch attraction that reaches speeds of up to 62 mph (100 km/h). Witnesses reported that Zavala appeared “engaged and well” at the beginning of the ride but was found slumped over and unresponsive by the ride’s conclusion.

Paramedics and park health services staff responded on scene, and investigators reviewed security footage as part of the inquiry. Zavala was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from multiple blunt-impact injuries.

Investigation and Ruling

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and concluded that Zavala’s death resulted from blunt-impact trauma. Injuries included fractures and head trauma consistent with repeated impact during the ride’s first descent.

Officials from the sheriff’s office stated that ride operators followed all established safety procedures and that no negligence or criminal conduct was found. The investigation has since been closed.

Universal Orlando Resort, which owns and operates Epic Universe, offered condolences to the family and confirmed full cooperation with local authorities throughout the review process.

Ride Warnings and Safety

Stardust Racers carries posted warnings advising guests with back, neck, or similar physical conditions, or those recovering from recent surgery, to refrain from riding. According to witness statements and the investigative report, Zavala had a history of spinal surgery and used a wheelchair, though authorities have clarified that his existing condition did not directly cause his death.

Park signage and guidelines for ride safety remain in place, and the attraction continues to operate following the incident after appropriate inspections and reviews.

Public Response and Broader Context

The incident drew attention in the theme park community and among safety advocates, particularly given its occurrence at one of the newest major theme park attractions in the United States. In past years, amusement park safety incidents in Florida have prompted legislative and regulatory discussions. This article will be updated if further official information becomes available.
